Everything started when Herbert Vianna (guitarrist) left Brasília and went to Rio de Janeiro, to study in a military school. Over there, he met a childhood friend, Bi Ribeiro (bass player). Both of them liked rock, and they started to play in an amateur way and invited a friend of Bi, Vital Dias, that played battery, to join them. In 1979, they stop playing to dedicate themselves to their entrance exam. They return in 1981 with two friends, Ronel and Naldo as vocalists.

When they return, they made songs focused on humor, and they called themselves “As Cadeirinhas da Vovó”. One year later, they decide to take the band in a more professional direction, however Ronel and Naldo leave the band because they didn’t want to be part of the project anymore. The band adapts and Herbert, that previously only played guitar, vecomes a vocalist. This was the moment in wich the band was rebranded as “Para-Lamas do Sucesso”. Vital had some problems that made him need to leave the band, so he was replaced by Joao Barone.

In 1982, the band releases their first album, “Cinema Mudo”. It had the funny songs they composed before professionalizing themselves, the band didn’t want to release those songs, but the editor forced them to do it in order to grant a serious release in the future.

In 1984, the band releases their so expected serious album, “O Passo do Lui”. It was a sucess, both financially and critically, making the band play in Rock in Rio, and their show was considered one of the best.

In 1986, they released their third album “Selvagem?”, it sold 700 thousand copies, and it’s sucess took the Paralamas to play in the Festival of Montreux, in 1987. Their show in Swiss would become their first live disk, “D”. Their presentation included a 4th Paralama, the keyboard player João Fera, that plays with the band until today, as a support musician.

In the 4th of January, 2001, a domestic plane piloted by Herbert crashed in Mangaratiba. His wife died and he had to be put on the tubes, he survived, but stayed paraplegic. The band stopped playing during this period, but when he got better, they released “Longo Caminho” and presented themselves in Fantástico. This period after the recovery was of great sucess, the public wanted to see how the band was after the accidente, and they were not dissapointed.

In 2012 they made a national tour to celebrate their 30 years of carrer, aind in 2016, together with Nando Reis, Dado Villa-Lobos,, Paula Tholler and Pitty, the band took part in a tour promoted by the project Nivea Vica Rock Brasil, a project that happens anually and takes artists on a tour throughout Brasil.

Their most known songs are “Lanterna dos Afogados”, “Aonde Quer Que Eu Vá”, “Meu erro”, “Melô do Marinheiro”, “Alagados”, “Envelheço na cidade”, “Ela Disse Adeus”, “Óculos” and“Romance ideal”
